One of the first light rail systems in Britain, with one of the world's safest and most advanced automatic train control systems, DLR has expanded faster than any UK railway.

The DLR opened in 1987 to serve the first brownfield developments in Docklands, with eleven trains and fifteen stations. Since then, a number of extensions have been seen the DLR extended to Bank, Beckton, Lewisham and London City Airport.

Today DLR is a 31 km railway with 38 stations and 94 vehicles. The DLR is now carrying more passengers than ever before, with further increases in demand management predicted. The system currently carries 64 million passengers a year and this is expected to rise to over 80 million by 2009.

Through further extensions and enhancements to the railway, DLR will continue to meet demand while acting as a catalyst for regeneration.

There are several railway extensions and enhancements already underway, including routes to Woolwich Arsenal and Stratford International, which will open in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
